Netflix and Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company have announced their latest film: “Becoming,” a documentary that follows Michelle as she goes on tour to promote her bestselling memoir of the same name.

Although the documentary was directed by Nadia Hallgren, it sounds like the film had extensive access to and input from Michelle Obama . After all, it was produced by Higher Ground Productions, the company the Obamas formed to create content for Netflix, S-potify and others.

And the announcement comes with a letter from Obama, in which she says this wasn’t just a standard book tour: “In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams.”

“American Factory,” the first film to come out of Higher Ground’s production deal with Netflix, won this year’s Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Higher Ground

While Netflix and Higher Ground only announced the film now, it won’t be a long wait for its release — Netflix plans to launch “Becoming” in just over a week, on May 6.

Decentralized or centralized? Bluetooth or geolocation? Control quarantines or alert people to infection risk? Store data for one month or six?

There are many questions that need answers to build an app-based system to manage the Covid-19 pandemic and lift lockdowns.

Much like how the implementation of health code systems wildly varies between Chinese provinces and cities, European countries are coming up with wildly different solutions.

The differences between Europe’s path to technology for epidemic control and how China did it offer a glimpse into the future.

In an era where China is increasingly exporting its innovations around the world, observing how other regions are taking to them is an ever-pressing issue for China tech.

A rich debate between governments, companies and private citizens is taking place in Europe, one that China didn’t get.

It is a debate that is slowing down the process, but it will determine what and how gets implemented—and how China’s techniques will be judged.

John H. Tyson, chairman of the board of Tyson Foods, warned that the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing the company to shutter locations across the country as some of its 100,000 workers have fallen ill.

“This means one thing,” he wrote. “The food supply chain is vulnerable. As pork, beef, and chicken plants are being forced to close, even for short periods of time, millions of pounds of meat will disappear from the supply chain.”

The ripple effect will make its way to consumers, Tyson noted, as “There will be limited supply of our products available in grocery stores until we are able to reopen our facilities that are currently closed.”

The Tyson plant in Waterloo, Iowa, was one that closed, having been linked to 182 cases of the coronavirus, which is nearly half the entire county’s total. In addition to that facility, pork processing plants for Smithfield Foods in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and JBS in Worthington, Minnesota, also closed indefinitely earlier this April. These three plants make up about 15% of pork production in the U.S.

The home-sharing service, under pressure from the coronavirus crisis, said Monday that it is establishing a new recommended “cleaning protocol” with the goal of reassuring both rental property hosts and their guests.

Airbnb said in a statement that the optional protocol will offer guidance on the best and safest practices for cleansing a residence’s various rooms. It will include a manual more than 40 pages long establishing the standards, as well as specifying particular chemicals and other products to do the job.

The protocol, for those hosts who choose to opt in, will also require a minimum 24 hours between rentals to reduce the chance a guest might encounter any residual viruses. Potential guests will be able to see whether hosts have opted in.

A top company official said Airbnb knows from surveys that cleanliness is a high priority with guests.

“It was clear they wanted to know what you were doing to make sure the place itself would be clean,” said Chris Lehane, a senior vice president, in an interview.

Educational institutions are introducing online courses and some education technology startups are temporarily offering free classes to help offset the impact of school closures.

Take Byju’s, an India-based education startup named after its founder, Byju Raveendran. In early March, it announced it would give children free access to its learning app, which it says had more than 40 million users at the end of last year. Around 3 million of those paid between $150 and $200 for an annual subion.

Since the announcement, the company says it has experienced a 60% surge in students using its products, which range from interactive video lessons and live classes, to quizzes and exam preparation.

A nationwide lockdown, ordered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late March, means that India’s school-age population of around 300 million is suddenly having to home educate.

“The outbreak is clearly increasing the appreciation of online education,” Raveendran tells CNN Business. “This could be a turning point for the industry, ushering in an increased usage of this format and changing habits in terms of how kids learn and how teachers teach,” he adds.

In a letter to investors, Pinduoduo founder Colin Huang suggests that companies with new business models, a group that Huang portrayed Pinduoduo as leading, are expected to outrun their older rivals in a world that’s witnessing a “reestablishment.”

The already intense rivalry between Pinduoduo and arch-rivals like Alibaba and JD is reaching a fever pitch as the Covid-19 is moving more Chinese shoppers online.

Instead of playing catch-up, the four-year-old company now claims to be China’s second-largest e-commerce platform with 585.2 million active buyers, next only to Alibaba.

Both Alibaba and JD have rolled out their counterpart apps that adopt similar models of Pinduoduo. More rivals like Alibaba-backed Suning are reportedly joining the battle.

Included in Pinduoduo’s 2019 annual report was a letter from its founder and CEO Colin Huang which sought to reassure shareholders about the company’s long-term growth prospects.

Different from the previous public letters that mainly address the company’s operations and strategies, Huang explained this time his thoughts on the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the history of time, mentioning the theories of big thinkers from Newton to Einstein.

By predicting a new world setup, he believes new models will prosper the most. He predicts old models will be phased off, without mentioning the company’s rivals by name.

The company has recorded RMB1.01 trillion ($144.6 billion) of gross merchandise volume from 585.2 million active buyers in 2019. That’s RMB1,720 ($247.1) of annual spending per active buyer, up 53% year on year from RMB 1,127 in 2018, the company’s 2019 report shows.

Their latest involves full and fine control of drones, using just hand and arm gestures to navigate through a series of rings.

This work is impressive not just because they’re using biofeedback to control the devices, instead of optical or other kinds of gesture recognition, but also because of how specific the controls can be, setting up a range of different potential applications for this kind of remote tech.

This particular group of researchers has been looking at different applications for this tech, including its use in collaborative robotics for potential industrial applications.

Drone piloting is another area that could have big benefits in terms of real-world use, especially once you start to imagine entire flocks of these taking flight with a pilot provided a view of what they can see via VR.

That could be a great way to do site surveying for construction, for example, or remote equipment inspection of offshore platforms and other infrastructure that’s hard for people to reach.

We’ve already had ghosts, aliens, evil Nazi doctors, freak show performers, killer clowns, more ghosts, more killer clowns, the literal apocalypse, and a cursed summer camp. But even after all this, AHS still finds ways to surprise us every single season.

As details are slowly emerging about what to expect in American Horror Story Season 10, we already know it’s got a stellar cast in place and have gotten some clues about the theme.

Production has been delayed. Ryan Murphy revealed to USA Today that Season 10 of American Horror Story was supposed to begin filming the last week of March, but had been put on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The fact that AHS was supposed to be filming in the spring was a surprise to fans, leading some to suspect that Murphy was plotting a potential summer drop (maybe to make room for the mysterious secret season to air later in 2020), but there’s little to no evidence to support this theory at this time.

It will likely premiere in fall 2020. Since its very first season, American Horror Story has always debuted in the fall. (It is spooky season, after all!)

It might feature a major Murder House crossover. On April 26, Murphy shared an image of Rubber Man on Instagram with the very cryptic caption “Coming soon…” The idea that Rubber Man may make an appearance in Season 10 is pretty surprising given that the iconic rubber suit just returned in Apocalypse.

It’s a breathtaking improvement on previous glowing plants. It’s brighter than previous genetically engineered tobacco plants, and it doesn’t need to be fed with chemicals to maintain luminescence. Also, the duration of the glow is much longer than glowing plants produced using plant nanobionics.

Of course, we all immediately think of a breathtaking Avatar-style night garden, glittering and gleaming in the darkness, and – further into the future – reducing our dependence on electric lighting.

But glowing greenery could also help us understand the plants themselves – how their metabolism works, and how they respond to the world around them.

The team worked on two species of tobacco plant. And, unlike previous genetically engineered glowing plants, which used bioluminescent bacteria or firefly DNA, these plants were engineered using the DNA of bioluminescent fungi.

“Although bacterial bioluminescence genes can be targeted to plastids to engineer autoluminescence, it is technically cumbersome and fails to produce sufficient light,” the researchers wrote in their paper.

“The caffeic acid cycle, which is a metabolic pathway responsible for luminescence in fungi, was recently characterised. We report light emission in Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana benthamiana plants without the addition of any exogenous substrate by engineering fungal bioluminescence genes into the plant nuclear genome.”

The nuggets will be supplied by U.S. agribusiness Cargill Ltd [CARGIL.UL] and will be sold at only three outlets in China in Shanghai and the southern cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen between April 28-30, KFC said on its official Weibo account.

Customers who would like to try a bite must purchase a pre-sale coupon, it said. One serving comprises of five chicken pieces and will be sold for 1.99 yuan.

The move comes amid growing global interest in China’s meat substitute industry, which has been identified by both U.S. players Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat (BYND.O) as a key target market. The coronavirus outbreak is also threatening China’s poultry production.

Yum Brands Inc’s (YUM.N) KFC started offering plant-based fried chicken supplied by Beyond Meat in the United States at one of its Atlanta outlets. The two companies said in January that they would expand that tie-up to several KFC stores in Tennessee and North Carolina.

KFC’s announcement garnered mixed reactions on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with some commentators saying that they hoped the new offering would be healthier.

One of the most “liked” comments under its post, however, said they were sceptical that the product would be popular in China. “We want to eat meat!,” said the poster.
