宋仁宗天性仁孝，对人宽厚和善。在他之前，虽然“仁政”，一直是传统政治的最高理想，但没有一个帝王能以“仁”为谥号或冠以“仁”。然而这位皇帝子嗣不昌，生了三个皇子十五个公主，却只有四个公主长大成人，包括三位皇子和十一位公主都早早夭折。当宋仁宗于嘉祐八年驾崩时，养子赵曙继承皇位，这就是宋英宗，第二年宣布改元治平，进入治平年间
治平元宝，是北宋英宗治平年间（公元1064～公元1067）铸造。为对钱，各有楷书，篆书，古篆三种书体，直读，旋读皆有，有背四出纹版式，且通宝，元宝成对。面文“治平元宝”四字旋读，有楷、篆两种书体，光背。

治平元宝和通宝目前被发现的材质有铜、铁、铅三种，铁制的最为多见、铅制次之，而铜钱最为少见，价格也比较高。治平元宝和通宝的钱文延续了仁宗钱一贯的风格，真、篆成对，笔法飘逸流畅，非常漂亮。治平钱版本很多，小版本尤其多，但也缺乏有代表性的版本。不过治平元宝中“大字内斜平”算比较出名的，《北宋铜钱》和《新编符合泉志》（二编）均将其列为一级。
